How did you become a maker?
I was born a maker! My parents made leather goods when I was a baby. My mom inspired me as she always had some project going on. She was either refinishing furniture, sewing, embroidering or handmaking my Halloween costumes (the store-bought costumes in my youth were pretty awful). When I was ten, my grandmother helped me sew a dress using an easy pattern on her sewing machine. At some point, my grandfather even taught me the technique of tatting. During my teens, I helped my mom do some remodeling where I learned to set tile, paint, install sinks, toilets and a disposal. In high school, I loved art, ceramics, & jewelry classes. After meeting my husband, I learned that he was from a family of makers too! He was always making something out of parts or fixing something that I thought was broken. The DIY cave has helped me extend my repertoire to welding, woodworking, leather and even more jewelry. As my daughters get older, I can see that they are makers too!

What can students expect from the class?
This class will concentrate on the basic skill of how to set a snap to create your bracelet base from leather. From there, you are only limited by your imagination! Embellish your bracelet with rivets, waxed thread, colored cord, beads, or whatever your heart desires? Just about anything can be hand-stitched or riveted to leather. We should have enough time and material to create two finished bracelets, depending on complexity.

What tools will students use?
The students will use a rotary cutter, cutting mat & ruler, hole punch, a variety of setters for snaps, rivets & eyelets, needle & thread.

Why do you like teaching at DIYcave?
It is amazing to see the creativity of each student and the “ah-ha” moments when a student achieves mastery.
